“Don’t let anyone else dictate your life. Too many times I have believed haters’ comments and it set me back to my ultimate goal. It isn’t about what they have to say, it’s about leaning so far into your dreams that they become reality. If I can do it, you can too!”–Carly
When you were younger, what did you think your life would look like as an adult?
I always had this dream of having my own place in New York City working a creative job as a magazine editor and having a super cute walk up to come home to with a house cleaner, fresh flowers, and a cute wardrobe! I have never been the girl who wanted to be married and have kids right away. I wanted to follow my dreams and possibilities … because anything is truly possible!
What does your life look like now?
I live in Los Angeles in my own cute place and own two companies in the creative space. One is a wedding planning company and one is nationwide shipping of floral bouquets.
I get to travel for work all over the world and split my time between here and Seattle. I do have fresh flowers in my house all the time and …a cute wardrobe … well, I think it’s cute! And a housecleaner (which has changed my life)!
What have you changed your mind about?
I am less judgmental than I used to be. I accept everyone at face value and don’t try to change people to fit my opinion or idea of who they should be. I believe people are who they show you they are the first time. I have also made a conscious effort to be more positive and to see possibilities instead of problems!
What were the pivotal moments and decisions that led you to where you are today?
My rock bottom moment was a few years ago. Realizing that I was loosing everything, I had an opportunity to let the situation take me down or I could fight back and rise up stronger, more compassionate, and a more empathic person. I truly love who I am more than I ever have in my entire life now.
What are you learning right now?
I am learning to trust my intuition and I’m learning to expand my mindset to see amazing possibilities instead of road blocks that are in front of me. I am learning to flip the script and take names!
What do you love about your life in this moment?
Life is so sweet right now. I am proud of myself for taking such good care of myself and my businesses during harder times and now seeing the fruit of my labors is one of the biggest gifts I could give myself and company.
What brings you joy/fills your soul?
Being with my family and friends fills me up. Cooking / being creative in the kitchen, riding my bike, and traveling to new places and restaurants. I’m a big foodie!
If a kid walked up to you asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?
Don’t let anyone else dictate your life. Too many times I have believed haters’ comments and it set me back to my ultimate goal. It isn’t about what they have to say, it’s about leaning so far into your dreams that they become reality. If I can do it, you can too!
What do you wish everyone knew about starting your own business, working for yourself, hiring others to work for you, and being a wedding planner?
It’s so much harder than you think. It’s 12-15 hours a day and working through vacations and holidays sometimes! Haters coming at you at all sides. Lack of sleep. Eating beans and rice sometimes. It’s getting creative to how you spend your money. It’s facing all your fears head on. It’s believing in yourself when no one else does. It’s about fighting back for what you want. It’s about street smarts. It’s about book smarts.
Working for yourself is one of the hardest things you’ll do. Be all in to the process. Be ready to weather storms. Be ready to surrender your ego, and serve your staff. It isn’t about just about being the baddest girl in town, it’s about building a legacy, encouraging your staff, and creating opportunities for possibility in your life and the lives of others.
