Mackenzie’s Story

“Work hard and never give up on your dreams but also don’t be afraid to give yourself some grace. Also learn to laugh at yourself.”

–Mackenzie

Editor’s Note: I asked questions of people who I have seen live out a fabulous story – during times when they have answers and times when they don’t. These stories inspired me, and I think they will give you perspective, too!

When you were younger, what did you think your life would look like as an adult?

When I was little, I envisioned myself as a teacher. I also envisioned myself married with kids and living a happy life.

What does your life look like now?

I am currently a 20-year-old college student. I am a student athlete playing beach volleyball and I am also a kinesiology major. I am pursuing a job as a medical professional in either Athletic Training or Physical Therapy. I have absolutely no idea what the years after college will look like but hey, God does!

What have you changed your mind about?

I never thought that I would be majoring in a science in college. Science for me has always been something I struggled with all through high school. But God gave me this passion for learning about the human body and how amazing and intricately He designed it. I also learned that if you approach science from a Christian perspective, you can literally see God’s hand in everything.

What were the pivotal moments and decisions that led you to where you are today?

The most pivotal decisions I have made has been to trust God wholeheartedly. God has a funny (sometimes quite frustrating) way of doing things, but when I trust God to carry me through, everything seems to fall in place.

What are you learning right now?

Right now I am learning that surrendering to God is not a one-time “come to Jesus” moment. Surrendering to God is a daily choice, but something that I have learned that I literally cannot live without.

Life is not always good. We live in a fallen world with evil people and sometimes bad things happen to good people. But, we were not meant to carry the weights that are sometimes placed on our lives. God is readily awaiting us with arms open wide.

And I promise you this: He will carry you through.

What do you love about your life in this moment?

I love the people in my life. My life is am filled with some of the greatest people who are so fun to walk life with.  I also love that I get to do what I am passionate about everyday.

What brings you joy/fills your soul?

Jesus, laughing ‘till I’m crying, serving others, and eating grapes.

If a kid walked up to you asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?

Work hard and never give up on your dreams but also don’t be afraid to give yourself some grace. Also learn to laugh at yourself.

What do you wish everyone knew about being a Christian?

I think that a lot of people think that Christianity is easy. With this kind of mindset, people become angry with God when things don’t go their way.  They think that God has forgotten about them. But that’s just not the case. God never promised that life wouldn’t suck at times or that you wouldn’t go through some trials.

But what He did promise is that He will be with you in every moment of your life — even in the darkest valleys. And sometimes it’s those darkest valleys that draw you closer to God. I’M TELLIN’ YOU GOD IS ALWAYS GOOD. ALWAYS.
