“I think my plans changed as I saw that my future isn’t based on the things I am good at but the person I am. I started shifting my focus once I began creating habits towards the person I wanted to become.”–Dekontee
When you were younger, what did you think your life would look like?
Oh goodness. I thought I would be married by 25 and start being in Broadway shows by then as well. I pictured this over-the-top wealthy life (finanically). I saw myself with a house in LA and traveling to NYC a bunch. I didn’t think much about my relationships and what it would take to cultivate a healthy life.
How did your dreams for the future change?
I think my plans changed as I saw that my future isn’t based on the things I am good at but the person I am. I started shifting my focus once I began creating habits towards the person I wanted to become.
I really owe that mindset shift to my church, Mosaic. I still want to be a performer – that hasn’t changed – but in order to get there, I realized I need to be a person of strong work ethic, consistency, and trust in order to get bigger roles.
Also, I have started to understand that God created us for community and through that His character shown brighter. Now my future can’t exist without that.
What were the kinds of pivotal moments that led you to where you are today?
Moving to LA and starting to live on my own. Break ups, dating, and life teaches you SO MUCH about yourself.
What are you learning right now?
Gosh, actually trusting God. That’s pretty self-explanatory. Also, that physical health/discipline is linked with spiritual health/discipline.
What do you love about your life in this moment?
I get to do what I love everyday. I don’t have a ton of money but I get to do things that I have always wanted to do. That’s really cool.
What brings you joy/fills your soul?
I think doing life with others. Building community wherever I can is so much fun and makes the artist life much more fullfilling.
If a kid walked up to you asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?
Do what you love as much as possible and bring people with you along the way.
What do you wish everyone knew about working in entertainment?
That it’s really hard. Like really hard. You will get rejected more than you want to admit.
